Ok, so you've gotten comfortable with the idea of blogging. How can you do it so that you interest an ever growing amount of readers?

Aside from being Archer Web Solutions' Content Coordinator I am also the editor of Knit Luck , a knitting news blog. I've blogged on different sites for the last four years and I've noticed a few things in my travels. What content works, what readers want and how to get people to find your content.

1) Give your readers value.

There are hundreds of personal blogs out there about babies, knitting, ice cream, and video games. Whatever you write about, give your readers something they can take away with them. Show them how they can be a better parent, knitter, ice cream eater, or video game player. Personal blogs are boring unless they offer lessons that help your readers. Help them find the best parenting tips, knitting supplies, ice cream recipes and video game hacks. Use your personal knowledge or simply link to those that know. Use these tips to write the best content.

2) Take it Slowly

Very few blogs are going to explode with traffic right away. Think of your blog as a persnickety houseplant that needs frequent care. The more attention you give your blog, the more traffic you will get. Use Google Analytics to keep track of the kind of content that is most popular on your site and create more of it. Check out how you can check your visitor engagement here.

 3) Comment, Comment, Comment!

Has someone mentioned your blog? Thank them by commenting on their blog. Comments are the easiest way that readers notice how popular your content is. Frequent comments show readers that people value what you have to say and make it more likely that future visitors will return to your site, giving you more traffic. 4) Use Twitterfeed (or something similar) to feed your blog to Twitter. (Don't know what Twitter is yet? Stay tuned for future posts.)

Every time you post to your blog, your Twitter account will pick up your RSS feed and automatically update Twitter.  This keeps your Twitter followers regularly updated with your site and reminds them to visit.

5) Use Twitter's search capability to attract more readers.

Everyone wants more followers on Twitter. More than that, they want relevant followers on Twitter. In my case, I searched for knitters using the term "knitting" to see who on Twitter was talking about knitting at that very moment. Not only was I able to follow those tweets, but often times these other Twitterers had excellent knitting content that I could then share on my site. Here are more tips on how to use Twitter for your blog.

Hope this helps you hit your blogging target!
